How to Make Polymer Clay Butterfly Wings.
How-To Tuesday!
- Pull or cut off a small chunk (about 1/4 of a block) of polymer clay. Knead and work the clay to soften it before rolling the clay into a ball. Repeat for the other desired colors until you have several balls of clay.
- Roll out your clay balls one at a time until you have a series of flat oblongs. Choose the order that you would like the colors to appear on the wings. Stack the clay oblongs, placing the outside color on the bottom of the stack and working your way up.
- Roll the clay oblongs into a clay “snake” by folding the stack into a taco-shell shape, then rolling the cylinder back and forth on the table. At this point, you should have a clay snake with the colors separated out in a bullseye pattern. Use the butter knife to cut vertical slices from the end, creating disks of clay.
- Pinch a disk at one side until it forms a teardrop shape. Repeat until you have four clay teardrops, and then press them together in pairs to form the butterfly wing shape. When you are satisfied with your design, bake the clay according to the packaging instructions.
